Antique Scrimshaw “Murder of the Innocents”

$2,800.00

Antique scrimshaw done on large whale’s tooth by an unknown scrimshaw artist. Biblical depiction of the Massacre of the Innocents ordered by King Herod. Very old tooth with fantastic patina. At one time it was probably mounted as a companion to WTA012 (The Liberation of Caractacus). Both are the exact same size and both have tiny holes drilled into the base, indicating they may have been mounted together at one time. Both are done in the same manner, undoubtedly by the same scrimshander. The back side depicts “Canadian Woman Weeping the Loss of her Child”, continuing the theme of lost children. The woman is sitting on top of a blanket with slight color in the design indicating the she may be Native American. Interesting pair. Weighs in at 15 oz.
