Antique Scrimshaw “The Liberation of Caractacus”

$3,200.00

Antique black and white scrimshaw on whale’s tooth by an unknown scrimshaw artist. Taken from a 19th century print by C. Panormo, the scene depicts the liberation of Caractacus by Emperor Claudius. The reverse side continues the Christian motif with a portrait of Eve, complete with the snake and apple. Excellent patina on this one and close inspection reveals the tell tale dots used by the old scrimshanders on board the whaling vessels. By the way, this is a matching pair with WTA011 (The murder of the Innocents). Both have small holes drilled into the base indicating that they were mounted together at one time. Undoubtedly, both are done by the same artist. Great set for the discerning collector. Weighs in at 15oz.
