Antique Scrimshaw “The Pacifick Ocian” (sic)

Black and white scrimshaw on antique whale’s tooth by unknown artist. Portrait of a well dressed Victorian lady wearing a fashionable had on one side of the tooth. Reverse side depicts a whaling scene with whaler, two whaleboats and pod of whales. Some slight color in this side as well. There appears to be the start of another scene that was obviously not completed at the bottom of the tooth, slightly above the horizon line. It appears the scrimshander began a scene with a palm tree, but, instead decided to go with a whaling scene. On the side, below the water is the title of the piece, including spelling errors, “The Pacifick Ocian”. Nice patina on this one. There is a very slight chip on the tip that is hardly noticeable. Piece weighs an even pound.

This scrimshaw is done on a sperm whale’s tooth. Federal legislation bans the interstate shipment of whale ivory. It can only be shipped intrastate (within the state).
