“Close Quarters Mishap” black and white scrimshaw on matched set of antique whale’s teeth. Quite a story here as four related scenes are beautifully depicted by this unknown artist. First, is Gathering Sail as large vessels convene. Second, is Close Quarters as someone has made a mistake. Third is Collision as one large vessel crashes into another. Finally, we have the Aftermath as questions and future lawsuits are sure to follow. Great deal going on here. The two teeth are a magnificent matched pair and are quite old judging by their patina. The fine scrimshaw is current, however. The beautiful stand was created by the late Ken Fredericks. This is one of the best bargains we have offered in some time. Basically, you are getting four masterful works for the price of one. From the collection of a client who is no longer with us.
