Death of Sir J. Moore

Black and white scrimshaw on antique whale’s tooth by an unknown scrimshaw artist. Sir John Moore was a British lieutenant general who led a famous retreat to La Coruna during the Napoleonic Peninsular War. He died in the Battle of La Coruna (Jan. 16, 1809). This antique work is from the collection of one of our long time clients who is no longer with us. This is in remarkable condition and the patina is incredible. It has just a touch of red in the flowers on the back side, a nice touch. By the way, this was taken to the Antiques Roadshow when it came to the Bay Area years ago and was appraised at $15,000 to $18,000. Unfortunately the collector did not get a written appraisal. However, he did have an original Myrick tooth that later sold for over $125,000.00! Probably created 1860s to 1880s. Weighs in at 1 lb. 5 oz. Very nice.
