Ice Bound Whalers 1871
“Ice Bound Whalers 1871” black and white scrimshaw on ancient walrus tusk ivory by Gerry Dupont. Most of the New England whaling fleet was lost after lingering too long. The winter ice crushed their ships and the New England whaling fleet never recovered. Remarkably, no one perished as they were rescued by whalers who left earlier. Masterful work by Dupont at a bargain price. From the collection of one of our clients who is no longer with us.
