Red Tail Hawks in Valley

“Red Tail Hawks in Valley” color scrimshaw on ancient walrus tusk ivory by David Adams. Pair of red tail hawks circle a steep valley, searching for prey. This is one of the most amazing pieces we have ever received as far as working the natural shape and texture of the unusual piece of ivory. Most scrimshanders would have rejected this piece of ivory, thinking nothing could be done with it. Not Adams. There was the workable section on the right side with the hawks and mountains in the background, but the left side was the problem. After studying the piece for some time, he came up with the concept of the cliffside, tree with roots, and slabs of granite, thus unifying both sides of the ivory. Amazing composition.
