“Sperm Whaling” black and white scrimshaw on rare matched set of sperm whale teeth by Ray Peters. Veteran scrimshander, Peters, has knocked it out of the park this time. This is a rare matched set of old sperm whale teeth as can be discerned by the rounded top of each tooth. The whaler on the left side is in the process of cutting in and trying the blubber of the whale that is secured to the side of the boat as sharks circle searching for a quick meal. Look closely at the action on board. Amazing detail here by Peters. The back of the tooth is a scene of the whaleboat with harpooner in the bow. The stipple work in the cloudy sky is simply amazing. One of the most time consuming of all scrimshaw techniques and seldom used by Peters.
The tooth on the right side depicts the perils of whaling as the huge bull sperm whale upsets the whaleboat tossing the whalers overboard. It was a dangerous undertaking for all of the seamen. The reverse side shows the whaleboat heading out as the whaler in the background works on another whale. One of the best touches here is the masterful rope border at the top. Note how an ever so slight shadow is cast below the line. Brilliant. The stand is a work of art in itself.
Peters said that this is the only matched set he has created in the last twenty plus years! We don’t anticipate another like this coming along again.
This scrimshaw is done on a sperm whale’s tooth. Federal legislation bans the interstate shipment of whale ivory. It can only be shipped intrastate (within the state).
