Thermopylae at Sea

$3,500.00

Color scrimshaw by Chris Lehwalder on large whale’s tooth. The “belle of the ball” here is the celebrated Aberdeen built clipper “Thermopylae”. As in the case of her rival in the China tea trade, the famous “Cutty Sark”, and also the “Titania” and the “Taeping”, she was of composite construction (elm and teak planking on iron frames). Her most prominent identifying characteristic however, was that her hull color was green, making her the “prettiest vessel ever” under sail. This is from the collection of one of our long time clients who is no longer with us. Nice size tooth which weighs some 14 ounces. Great opportunity to get a Lehwalder at a sale price.
