Battle of Lake Erie

$2,400.00

“Battle of Lake Erie” black and white scrimshaw on antique ivory whale’s tooth by talented unknown carver. Completely worked 360 degrees. Scrimshander also did a nice rendition of a stately government building. Script reads “Com Perrys Victory on Lake Erie Sept. 10th 1813”. Battle shown on both side of tooth. Tooth has a marvelous patina and the tip has been rounded off, indicating the old age of the sperm whale. This if from the collection of one of our clients who is no longer with us. He collected contemporary scrimshaw, but probably recognized this as a rare antique piece and added it to his collection. Good eye there.
