“Battle of Monitor vs Merrimac” color scrimshaw on ancient walrus tusk artifact by Matt Stothart. Famous Civil War battle ended in a draw, but marked an end of wooden battleships era. Veteran scrimshander, Stothart, has done another first rate piece. This walrus tusk was used as an ice axe, or diggint tool, by ancient people in the Northern Bering Sea area 500-1200 years ago. Not much of this material around troday. The custom walnut stand matches the tones of the ivory. Nice piece all around.
