Serengeti Panorama

Mary Gregg Byrne - Serengeti Panorama

“Serengeti Panorama” color scrimshaw on complete ancient walrus tusk by Mary Gregg Byrne. Serengeti translates to “endless plains” in the Maasai language. Byrne has depicted some of the better known inhabitants, human and animal, that one associates with the Serengeti. Mary Gregg Byrne was one of the originators of contemporary West Coast scrimshaw in the early 70s. She has not done any scrimshaw for more than a decade, so collectors always pay attention whenever a Byrne piece appears on the market today. This was probably done in the mid 1980s and is from the collection of one of our clients who is no longer with us. When his estate shipped it to us it was poorly packaged and the tip was broken off. We decided to have it repaired, which took over a year start to finish, and have a new stand created for it. Scrimshander, Matt Stothart, also assisted in the restoration process. The finished product is amazing. This is a very large, heavy tusk that weighs 5 pounds, 5.6 ounces! Not many left of this size and condition today.

Barn Owl in Full Moon

M. Byrne D. Adams Scrimshaw - Barn Owl in Full Moon

“Barn Owl in Full Moon” stunning portrait of a barn owl as a full moon rises in the background done on pre-ban African Ivory by Mary Byrne and David Adams. Backstory on this gem: Years ago I sent several ivory pieces to Byrne for Scrimshaw Gallery. Recently, I asked her to return them as she no longer was creating scrimshaw. She had begun the barn owl in black and white. Why polish this off? Adams agreed to take on the task and finish the piece. A once in a lifetime collaboration by two of the very best scrimshanders ever. I asked both to sign it which they did. Obviously, there will never  be another one like this.

Notice:
This scrimshaw is done on pre-ban African ivory. Since the passage of the CITIES Treaty in 1973, there has been no African ivory brought into the U.S. However, ivory that was in the U.S. prior to 1973 can be legally sold and shipped within the U.S. However, new legislation taking effect in 2016 restricts pre-ban African Ivory from being shipped interstate. It can only legally be shipped intrastate, (within the state). All of our pre-ban ivory is located with our associate in the state of Florida. It can be purchased directly from our website and shipped only to an address within the state of Florida. If one has a relative, trusted friend or business associate within the state of Florida, we can ship to that specified address in order to comply with the new Federal legislation. The scrimshaw can then be forwarded it to you and everyone complies with the law. Any questions email or call us.

Wild Stallion and Herd

Mary Byrne Scrimshaw - Wild Stallion and Herd

“Wild Stallion and Herd” color scrimshaw on ancient walrus tusk ivory by Mary Byrne. Rearing wild stallion oversees his herd as it passes by. One of the colts appears to have the same coloring. Scenes such as this can still be seen in parts of the West. Byrne, who was one of the very best of the West Coast scrimshanders, created this in the late 70s. It is from the collection of one of our clients who is no longer with us. Long tusk that was split in two at some time in the past. An artifact in the making that did not pan out.

Mystical Swan Family

Mary Byrne Scrimshaw - Mystical Swan Family

“Mystical Swan Family” color scrimshaw on ancient walrus tusk ivory artifact by Mary Byrne. One of the most talented of all the contemporary West Coast scrimshanders, Byrne’s work is rarely seen and is prized by astute collectors. This is classic Byrne, not only in subject matter, but, also in composition. The ominous dark water’s surface is broken by the female swan and her cignets revealing shades of bright blue underneath the dark surface. Love the tones in the dominate male’s wings. Ivory was used as an ice axe by ancient people hundreds of years ago. From the collection of one of our long time clients who is no longer with us. Great piece at 1980s prices.

Preening Flamingo Group

Byrne Scrimshaw - Preening Flamingo Group - Scrimshaw Collector

‘Preening Flamingo Group’ color scrimshaw on pre-ban ivory tip by Mary Byrne. An extremely rare work by Byrne done in the mid 1980s from the extensive collection of one of our long time clients who is no longer with us. Unusual to see Byrne’s work on the open market today. The client always said it was one of his top pieces and he did have many great pieces. Byrne’s style was all her own. No one ever did it quite like she did. Mounted on a stand by the late Ken Fredericks this is an incredible bargain. It was originally sold for $3850.00; however, the estate asked that we price it to move and we have done so.
