Ahead of the Storm

“Ahead of the Storm” black and white scrimshaw on ancient walrus tusk ivory artifact by James W. Lee. Clipper ship racing from dangerous storm, black clouds and strong winds whipping up heavy, rolling seas. Lee’s stipple work on this one is outstanding. Look at the sky and sails. He really put in a great deal of highly detailed work on this one. Not sure how the ivory was used as a tool, but it bears the marks of ancient people along the northern Bering Sea Area. Lee created this gem in 1993 and it is from the collection of one of our clients who is no longer with us. Handsome stand completes the picture.
