Antique Scrimshaw Man at Pedestal, Eagle on Pedestal

Black and white scrimshaw (with a trace of color) on antique whale’s tooth by unknown artist. Portrait of spread winged eagle holding a shield in its beak while perched on a stand on one side. Other side is a portrait of a handsome man with his left hand on another stand resting on an unknown object. Very old piece as can be seen by the pin prick method used by the old sailors. Beautiful patina on this one that comes from the collection of one of our long time clients who is no longer with us. Slight chip at the bottom of the sailor’s right foot. This impressive piece weighs in at one pound, one ounce.

This scrimshaw is done on a sperm whale’s tooth. Federal legislation bans the interstate shipment of whale ivory. It can only be shipped intrastate (within the state).
