Inquit Woman and Grandchild

Heidi Robichaud - Inquit Woman and Grandchild

“Inquit Woman and Grandchild” sepia toned scrimshaw on ancient mammoth tusk ivory by Heidi Robichaud. Inspired choice of sepia tones for this touching scene which compliments the ivory’s tones as well bringing to mind the old photographs of Curtis. This was done in 1994 by Robichaud and is from the collection of one of our long time clients who is no longer with us. Creative base using soapstone mounted on the wooden base. Someone put a great deal of work in this piece. Note the detail of the patterns within the border on the top of the piece. This one has so much going for it. Rare opportunity to add a first class Heidi Robichaud to one’s collection at 1994 prices!

Rocky Mountain Goat

Heidi Robichaud Scrimshaw - Rocky Mountain Goat

“Rocky Mountain Goat” color scrimshaw on ancient walrus tusk ivory artifact by Heidi Robichaud. Nice family portrait of nannie mountain goat and kid. Incredible work by Robichaud of using the natural color and tones of the ivory in her subject matter. Note  how the snow pack on the right turns into brush and the natural materials on the left side of the tusk resemble spots of unmelted spring snow. She created this outstanding piece in 1984 and it is from the collection of one of our clients who is no longer with us.  Ivory was used as an ice axe by natives of the Northern Bering Sea area hundreds of years ago. By the way, mountains goats are not in the same genus as goats and are associated with gazelles and antelopes. Great piece!

Native Woman with Pipe

Heidi Robichaud Scrimshaw - Native Woman with Pipe

“Native Woman with Pipe” sepia toned scrimshaw on ancient walrus tusk ivory artifact by Heidi Robichaud. Extraordinary portrait of stately Native mother with child, both smoking their pipes and staring into the distance. One wonders what they are looking at and thinking. Love the way Robichaud added just a little color to the jewelry and intricate design of the shawl on the older woman. Nice contrast. This is done on a nice ice axe used by Natives in the Northern Bering Sea area hundreds of years ago. Robichaud created it in 1984 and it is from the collection of one of our clients who is no longer with us. A bargain at 1980s price

Lapps

"Lapps" - Heidi Robichaud Scrimshaw

“Lapps” color scrimshaw on complete ancient walrus tusk ivory by Heidi Robichaud. Created in 1984, this masterpiece is from the collection of one of our long time clients who is no longer with us. The way the scrimshander used the natural colors and tones in the ivory is simply amazing. This is one of those rare tusks that is black on the outside, but much lighter once it is polished. Originally, it came with a stand by the late Ken Fredericks, but the collector wanted all of his pieces mounted on oak stands. This one even has a brass nameplate. Just study the close up photos. Cannot say enough about this one.

Ballerina

Heidi Robichaud Scrimshaw - Ballerina

Color scrimshaw on an impressive ancient walrus tusk ivory artifact by Heidi Robichaud. This was created by Robichaud in 1985 and is from the collection of a client who is no longer with us. He had his own oak stands made for most pieces in his collection with space for a brass nameplate to be engraved with a title and name of the scrimshander. Unfortunately, he never got around to that part. One does not have to be a dance enthusiast to appreciate the lines and beauty of the ballerina. This is done on one of those artifacts that we never come across anymore. It was used as an ice axe and also as a type of whetstone to shape thick fish bones that would be used as sewing needles, hence the grooves in the side. Amazing, indeed. This massive piece of ivory weighs over 3 pounds! We won’t see another like this again.

Holy Family of Francis I

Artist Raphael
Year 1518
Medium Oil on canvas transferred from wood
Location Louvre, Paris
Dimensions 81 in × 55 in
207 cm × 140 cm

This 1518 oil painting was also from Raphael’s workshop but was mainly delegated to his assistants. It shows the Virgin Mary stretching her arms to carry the infant Jesus, with Saint Joseph; the cousin of the Madonna, Saint Elisabeth, and the young John the Baptist.

The influence of the artist to his apprentices is evidenced by the use of lighting and different shades to put the background at the back of the main subjects. The Madonna and the young Savior was made with warm colors and increased lighting which is typical of Raphael’s works.

The artwork was named what it was because it was gifted to the wife of the French king, Francis I, by the Pope Leo X.

207 cm × 140 cm

Heidi Robichaud Scrimshaw - Mariana in the Moated Grange

Rejected by her fiancé, Angelo, after her dowry was lost in a shipwreck, she leads a lonely existence in a moated grange. She is still in love with Angelo – now Deputy to the Duke of Vienna – and longs to be reunited with him.

Woman of Lanzarote

Heidi Robichaud Scrimshaw - Woman of Lanzarote

Color scrimshaw on ancient mammoth tusk ivory by Heidi Robichaud. Vintage Robichaud scrimshaw originally created in 1983. This is from the collection of one of our long time clients who is no longer with us. Incredible detail on every inch of the piece, from the look of age on the woman’s face to the tight weave of the wicker basket. Heidi has done a great job coordinating the color of the scrimshaw to the stand. Mounted on a classic Ken Fredericks stand.
