“Enraged Bull Sperm Whale” color scrimshaw on huge piece of ancient mammoth tusk ivory by Matt Stothart. The whale is winning so far. One whaleboat has already been demolished and its crew is scrambling to get on another whaleboat. The harpooner appears ready to strike, but the odds are against him this day. There is much going on in this scene by veteran scrimshander, Stothart, that one has to take some time to appreciate the fine detail here. Note the detail of the carefully coiled line by the harpooner. This is huge piece of mammoth ivory, by the way, measuring 7 3/8″W x 4 1/4″H !! Mounted on a beautiful bubinga stand, this would be the centerpiece of any serious scrimshaw collection.
“Leopard at Rest” color scrimshaw on ancient walrus tusk ivory artifact by Matt Stothart. Ivory used as a tool hundreds and hundreds of years ago by ancient people. Not sure how it was used, but bears scraping marks on bottom and one ends appears to have been worked as well. Interesting. Leopard appears to be chilling before his next adventure. Nice work by veteran scrimshander, Stothart.
“Bellowing Elk” color scrimshaw on ancient mammoth tusk ivory by Matt Stothart. Veteran scrimshander has done a magnificent job on this one. A fully complete scene that fills up the entire surface. Nice piece of mammoth with rare blue bark left intact.
“Battling Bison” color scrimshaw on ancient walrus tooth ivory by Matt Stothart. Not many artists could get two battling bisons on a walrus tooth, but veteran scrimshander, Stothart makes it look easy. One of his favorite subjects, by the way.
“Sea Otters” color scrimshaw on ancient walrus tooth ivory by Matt Stothart. Sea otter mom and baby depicted by veteran scrimshander, Stothart. Nice composition for a horizontal tooth. Stothart always does a great job.
“Sea Otters and Elk” color scrimshaw on ancient walrus tusk ivory artifact by Matt Stothart. Veteran scrimshander, Stothart, has always been a top artist. This has a “day at the beach” feel to it. Family of sea otters, including adorable baby on mom’ stomach, are happily devouring sea urchins near the shore when a pair of elk appear, unaware of the family picnic. Stothart has done a masterful job on this artifact. Ivory was used as an ice axe hundreds of years ago in the Northern Bering Sea area. From the collection on. one of our clients who. is no longer with us.
